Bloody urination, tips and advice.

When should you consult your doctor?

Consult your doctor as soon as you notice that your urine is tinted red or contains filaments or blood clots.

That reveal symptoms

Do not try to question or analyze the situation, but see your doctor to any signs of blood in the urine. Until proven otherwise, we assume that the problem is caused by a tumor: the symptom is very serious.

Of course, there is not always a tumor. Very violent exercise - like running a marathon - can cause hematuria (medical name a bloody urination). Similar situation could occur in the case of a bruised kidney in a fall or an automobile accident.

People whose body lacks certain enzymes produce reddish urine that looks like blood when they eat beets. In addition, certain medications based phenolphthalein counter, including laxatives can also tint the urine red. Those who hold long may rupture small veins of the bladder.

It is not very serious, but you should see a doctor. Infections, kidney stones, prostate problems and kidney disease can also cause the appearance of blood in the urine. The blood may appear in the form of filaments or small clots. Most of the time, the urine will be very colorful, somewhat resembling a cranberry juice or, in more serious cases, with tomato juice.

Relief of symptoms

It is not enough to see your doctor, tell him that you have blood in your urine and ask him to prescribe medication. Do not treat cases of bloody urination as a simple discomfort. An accurate diagnosis must first be established or, at least, one must exclude the possibility of a tumor. Here's what you can do before an exam and what to expect once in the doctor's office.

Call a urologist. It would be best to call directly neuro-urologist or gynecologist rather than your family doctor. Because of the complexity of the tests pass, you will see a specialist anyway, except in the case of a woman who has a history of cystitis or urinary tract infection.

Take notes. To the extent possible, before you go to the doctor, note the exact color of your urine and when the color appeared. This information may help the doctor to find out the source of the problem.

A dark red or cloudy urine may indicate an infection or kidney disease. If the urine is a whole blood red, it could be a kidney or bladder. If this is the first time a bright red color appears, it could be a disorder of the prostate or urethra in men or female urethra. (The urethra is a tube from the bladder through which urine is passed). Or filaments clots of blood in urine flow usually normal, may indicate bleeding from the upper urinary tract or bladder.

Medical examinations. Expect to have to pass a series of tests until the doctor finds the cause of the bleeding. We will complete examinations from the kidneys to the urethral opening. Urine tests, x-rays of the kidneys and a cystoscopy, a procedure in which an instrument is inserted through the urethra and through the urinary tract are among the tests that you must undergo.
